Amavasya is a day dedicated to the worship of one's ancestors. It is believed that offering prayers to the ancestors on this day liberates their souls from the cycle of birth and death and brings salvation to them.

ज्येष्ठ मास की अधिक अमावस्या 13 जून 2018 को है। अमावस्या तिथि को दान पुण्य के लिये, पितरों की शांति के लिये किये जाने वाले पिंड दान, तर्पण आदि के लिये बहुत ही सौभाग्यशाली दिन माना जाता है। साथ अमावस्या एक मास के एक पक्ष के अंत का भी सूचक है। दरअसल ज्येष्ठ अमावस्या को न्याय प्रिय ग्रह शनि देव की जयंती के रूप में मनाया जाता है।
