New aerial footage released by the United States Geological Survey’s Hawaiian Volcano Observatory gives a glimpse of the changes that have occurred within Halema‘uma‘u crater at the summit of Kilauea since the volcano began to erupt ash in mid-May.

This drone footage, taken on May 31, shows various cracks and faults that have formed since the volcano began its series of recent eruptions.

According to information on the USGS website, yellow sulfur precipitate is visible on the floor of the crater along with ballistic blocks, which are solidified pieces of old lava. Credit: US Geological Survey via Storyful
