Welsh star Gareth Bale said on Thursday (9th June) that being part of the European Championship was "surreal" as Wales prepared to face Slovakia in their opening match of the tournament on Saturday.

The world's most expensive player Gareth Bale spoke on Thursday about his excitement at being part of a major championship finals for the first time as Wales prepared to make their debut at the European Championship tournament finals.

Bale is the standout player in the Welsh squad which qualified for a major finals for the first time since the World Cup in 1958.

Wales play Slovakia in their first match on Saturday before going on to meet England and Russia.

Bale, who last month won a second Champions League final with Real Madrid, said that Chris Coleman's side are not at the finals "just make up the numbers".

Bale scored seven of Wales's 11 goals in the qualifying group - and played his first international football since October in Sunday's 3-0 defeat by Sweden, appearing as a substitute for the final 30 minutes.
