The general public can now visit a long-closed-off cultural attraction from the Joseon Dynasty... on the grounds of South Korea's presidential office.
Chilgung, loosely translated as the Seven Shrines,... honors seven concubines who bore sons that eventually became kings of the Joseon Dynasty.
Their ancestral tablets are housed there... and not at Jongmyo, the main royal shrine,... because the women were not considered royalty.
Their shrines had been closed to the general public for security reasons since 1968... after North Korean infiltrators tried to assassinate then-President Park Chung-hee.
So, until now, the only way to get in... when it was open... was on a pre-arranged tour of the Cheongwadae itself.
Reservations can be made at www-dot-royalpalace-dot-G-O-dot-K-R.
