A heroic family had a holiday to remember when they used their luggage straps to save the lives of 19 beached dolphins. Teenager Finley Meakin, 13, spotted the panicking pod swimming unusually close to the shore at the secluded resort of Lochbuie off the west coast of Scotland. He called for help when it became obvious the mammals had become stuck in the shallow waters after following a school of mackerel towards the beach. His quick-thinking uncle Simon Lane, 59, rushed down to the beach on the Isle of Mull and immediately waded in to help the "mass stranding" on July 24. The family then spent two hours slowly moving the dolphins, which weighed between 35lbs and 200lbs, back into the deeper water.
