Children woke up to a blanket of snow in Gander, Newfoundland, on Thursday, May 23, and no school. The storm set a record for snow on that date with 32 centimeters (more than a foot) falling by Thursday morning, a news report said.

Spring snowstorms are not uncommon in the Gander area of Newfoundland, with snow falling as late as June, a news report said.
