Residents of Indonesia’s Mount Merapi left their home after the volcano erupted at about 3am local time on Thursday, May 24.
Hundreds of people have been evacuated since Merapi, one of Indonesia’s most active volcanoes, started erupting this week.
The video shows what the government called “self-evacuation” at Cangkringan village, Sleman district, in Yogyakarta province.
Volcanic ash reached different villages in Central Java and Yogyakarta provinces, the National Disaster Management Authority (BNPB) said.
The eruption of Merapi this year began to erupt on May 11.
The authorities raised the status level to alert at 11 am on May 21 and ordered an exclusion zone of 1.9 mile radius. About 660 people from different villages had evacuated earlier this week. Credit: Yogyakarta Disaster Management Authority/BDPB DIY via Storyful
