This bungling drunk driver narrowly avoided a deadly crash - when he fell asleep and rolled across a ten-lane motorway.

The sloshed motorist had finished a heavy night drinking when he stopped his black Toyota Altis during rain in Khon Kaen, Thailand just before sunrise.

But he nodded off behind the wheel and CCTV cameras recorded his car rolling across the busy highway on April 28 before stopping on a traffic island.

Police arrived and found the man fast asleep with a half-empty bottle of brandy resting on the handbrake. He was four times over the limit.

The man, who was not named, admitted drunk driving and negligent driving and was ordered to appear at court later this month.

Deputy Officer Jumlong Suwalak from Khon Kaen police said the driver faces up to a year in jail and a fine of up to 20,000 baht (460gbp) and a six-month driving ban.

He said: ''The suspect was found asleep and drunk inside his car. Breath tests showed he had 130 milligrams of alcohol in his body when the limit is 35 milligrams.

''Police officers brought him to sub-police station office to recover since he could not talk and was still in a sleepy state the whole time.

''The man slept all day at the station, woke up and was told to return home first and come back when he was sober.

''His punishment is to be decided by the court. He also had cases in past for negligence driving.''
