North Korea is seeking to add more flight routes to other countries,... and it wants to do that by linking its flight information region, or F-I-R, to that of South Korea.
F-I-Rs are regions of airspace assigned to the air traffic controllers of specific countries,... and access to South Korean air traffic control would allow the North to have more routes.
Seoul's foreign ministry said Tuesday that the matter is being considered by relevant ministries... with the transport ministry at the center.
The ministry spokesperson added that, to his knowledge, the North wants to create a new route to a third country -- not South Korea -- unlike what's been previously reported.
It was reported last week that the North had applied to the International Civil Aviation Organization in February to open new air routes to the South.
Currently, North Korea's Air Koryo has only chartered flights to China and Russia.
