Candi Staton is an American soul and gospel singer, best known for her 1970 remake of Tammy Wynette's "Stand By Your Man" and her 1976 disco hit "Young Hearts Run Free".
"Young Hearts Run Free" reached No. 1 on the US Billboard Hot R&B/Hip-Hop Songs and No. 20 on the US Billboard Hot 100 in 1976. The song also reached No. 2 on the UK Singles Chart in the same year.
In 2001, we got a chance to re-record all of Candi Staton's numerous hits for Marathon Music, and my friend Paul Savory. We even recut her first Northern Soul classic, "Now You Got The Upper Hand". But what a privilege it was indeed, to be able to re-record the ultimate 1970s soul classic, "Young Hearts Run Free", with its original artist, and to shoot a video for it as well. When I cut the sixteen track album for my friend Paul, my one condition was that we got a chance to cut a brand new song on this timeless legend, and we cut a track which I'm very proud of too. "Just When You Think It's Safe" was our attempt to recapture the wonderful magic of "Young Hearts Run Free" with a brand new but retro seventies type production, which, to my mind, succeeded admirably. I also cut a great Disco song with Candi at the same time, called "I Couldn't Get To Sleep At All", which came out in 2002 on Rumour Records. She has been recording for over forty years, but she still looks gracious and beautiful.
