Facing fierce anti-government protests, Armenian Prime Minister Serzh Sargsyan has caved into pressure to step down and announced his resignation on Monday.
He was voted in by lawmakers as prime minister just last Tuesday after ten years as president.
However there have been days of protests in the capital Yerevan and other cities opposing Sargsyan's new role, which the public sees as a move to cling on to power.
Armenia's opposition leader Nikol Pashinyan has called for a snap parliamentary election.
He was arrested Sunday for demanding Sargsyan's resignation, but was released just before the prime minister's announcement to resign.
Former Prime Minister Karen Karapetyan has taken over as acting PM.
