With a waiting list of 30,000 people for a place at a subsidised care home, a waiting time of 20 to 30 months and a rapidly ageing population, Hong Kong is heading towards a crisis in housing for the elderly. To try and mitigate the problem, the government has started a pilot scheme to house some people over the border in Southern China. The FT's Amie Tsang examines whether exporting its elderly to China is a viable solution.
