Just over a week ago, a now-infamous race occured in the UK between a 2018 Nissan LEAF, a 2017 Hyundai IONIQ EV and a previous-generation 30 kilowatt-hour Nissan LEAF. Starting in Leicestershire and driving in accordance with all regulations, the three cars and their drivers set out to see which vehicle would arrive in Aberdeen, Scotland (a trip of 450 miles/724 kilometers) first. On paper, the 2018 Nissan LEAF seemed to be the winner, thanks to its 40 kilowatt-hour battery pack and much longer range than its two challengers.

But because of an issue with rapid charger throttling, the new LEAF actually arrived three hours after the Hyundai IONIQ EV, proving what many early LEAF owners had feared: rapid charging seems to be throttled back on long-distance trips after two (or three) quick charging sessions and highway/motorway driving.

So what next? What's the cause? And will it get fixed? Here's what we know thus far -- and as always, we'll update you when we have more info.
