 Meghan McCain, daughter of Senator John McCain, came to the defense of her father after Republican Representative Liz Cheney of Wyoming voiced support for the use of torture in military situations, reports CNN. Liz Cheney's justification effort came after the Arizona senator voiced his objections to President Trump's nomination of Gina Haspel as CIA director on Tuesday.  Politico notes that Haspel's history with the government includes leading a CIA "black site" operating in Thailand after the 9/11 attacks. Extreme torture means were reportedly utilized there in efforts to extract information from detainees.  Shortly after Haspel was mentioned as Director Mike Pompeo's possible replacement, Sen. John McCain, who was himself held as a prisoner of war and tortured for years, tweeted, "The torture of detainees in U.S. custody during the last decade was one of the darkest chapters in American history."  "The Senate must do its job in scrutinizing the record & involvement of Gina Haspel in this disgraceful program," he continued. Liz Cheney, whose father, Dick Cheney, was vice president at the time the black site was operating, responded, "The Enhanced Interrogation Program saved lives, prevented attacks, & produced intel that led to Osama bin Laden." "The techniques were the same as those used on our own people…No one should slander the brave men & women who carried out this crucial program," she further said. That's where Meghan McCain entered the conversation, tweeting on Thursday, "My father doesn't need torture explained to him."
