New Pedestrian Bridge in Miami Collapses, Killing Several People A brand new $14.2 million pedestrian bridge collapsed on the Florida International campus. People and several cars are now trapped under the rubble. FIU media releases say the bridge weighs 950 tons. Construction on the bridge began in 2017 by FIGG Bridge Engineers, who said that the bridge was not expected to open for pedestrian use until 2019. We are shocked and saddened about the tragic events unfolding at the FIU-Sweetwater pedestrian bridge. At this time we are still involved in rescue efforts and gathering information
