The prime surviving suspect in the 2015 Islamic State attacks in Paris is refusing to answer questions as he appeared in court in Brussels on Monday for the first time since his capture nearly two years ago.
Salah Abdeslam is on trial for attempted murder charges for the police shooting that led to his arrest.
He urged the court not to pander to anti-Muslim prejudice, adding that his silence did not make him a criminal.
The attacks in November 2015 killed at least 130 people.
