While presenting the Union Budget 2018 in the Parliament on Thursday, Union Finance Minister Arun Jaitley hailed the demonetisation move and stated that it was received by honest tax-payers as 'Imaandari ka Utsav'. Jaitley said tax payer base has risen from 6.47 crore in 2014-15 to 8.27 crore in 2016-17. The budget will be Narendra Modi government's last full budget before 2019 Lok Sabha elections. In Budget 2018-19, the government has pegged fiscal deficit at 3.3 per cent of GDP for the fiscal year starting April 1, 2018. Though the fiscal deficit target is higher than the 3 per cent as projected earlier in the fiscal consolidation roadmap, markets had expected the government to go for a higher fiscal deficit target.
