Four miniature horses and a donkey were mauled to death by as many as three dogs that broke into a petting zoo in San Jose, California, reports KPIX. The first incident, which claimed the life of Happy Hollow Park and Zoo's horse Sweet William, reportedly occurred on January 15. Though at-risk animals were moved to what was deemed a more secure location, the dogs were successful in entering the area by digging a path beneath the fence, notes KGO. KNTV reports that on January 20, the canines went on to kill three more miniature horses and a Sicilian donkey. Two of the three dogs have been captured, and no one has stepped forward to claim ownership of them. As such, the animals will likely be put down. If the dog owners do surface, they could be given the option of participating in a "dangerous dog" hearing. The third dog, described as Chihuahua-terrier mix, remains at large but is not considered to be a significant threat.
