A petition urging the government to scrap plans that would stop women from using their housing benefit to pay for refuge accommodation has been handed into Downing Street. The action was supported by MPs and campaigners, including the actress Dame Julie Walters. An estimated 13,000 women and 13,000 children escape domestic abuse to a refuge in England each year.
