Pongal is celebrated across India with great favor. Unity, peace and brotherhood can be very well observed during the celebration of different festivals on our incredible land. The scene is no different during the Pongal celebrations, when people of different communities come together to celebrate the winter harvest. Pongal is basically a four-day-long festival celebrated mainly in Tamil Nadu, and falls in the month of Thai (that is, between January-February) when crops like rice, sugarcane, turmeric etc. are harvested. It marks the beginning of Uttarayana, the sun’s movement northward for a six-month period, which is considered auspicious. Besides the religious and culture significance of the festival, Pongal is also known for uniting people across regions.
