Heavy rain lead to flooding and mudflows in Montecito, California, on Tuesday, January 9, near where the Thomas wildfire burned last year. At least five people were killed after .54 inches of rain fell in five minutes in the early hours of Tuesday.

Firefighters worked to rescue people who were stuck in their homes and vehicles. Mudflows shut down a 30-mile stretch of the 101 Freeway between Santa Barbara and Ventura counties. Credit: Craig Boyce via Storyful
