Residents in some eastern areas of Ireland experienced sub-zero temperatures as strong, cold winds continued late in the first week of January.

Amateur weather forecaster Alan O’Reilly, who runs the website CarlowWeather.com, filmed this footage amid strong winds and deep snow on Lugnaquilla in County Wicklow on January 7. The mountain is the 13th highest in Ireland and the highest outside County Kerry.

O’Reilly, a seasoned weather watcher, said the windchill was the worst he’d experienced in a few years, and advised drivers to “allow extra time to defrost your car in the morning.” Credit: Facebook/Carlow Weather via Storyful
