Cautioning that the country might be facing a mental health epidemic, President Ram Nath Kovind on Saturday voiced his concerns over the shortage of professionals to combat the situation and said the gap needs to be addressed on priority. Delivering the 22nd convocation address at National Institute of Mental Health and Neurosciences, Bengluru, the President pointed out that there were just about 5,000 psychiatrists and less than 2,000 clinical psychologists in India while nearly 10% of Indians had one or the other mental health problem. In the light of the recent spike in mindless violence and anger coming in from different parts of the country, facilities which can diagnose and treat these issues would surely be welcome.
