Extremely cold temperatures in Canada on Friday produced this "sun dog" effect in Winnipeg.

A sun dog, formally called a parhelion in meteorology, is an atmospheric optical phenomenon that consists of a bright spot to the left and/or right of the Sun.

The sun dog is caused by the refraction of sunlight by ice crystals in the atmosphere.
