Rian Johnson, the director of Star Wars: The Last Jedi, has provided his explanation for Luke Skywalker’s first scene in the movie.
The scene came as a surprise to some viewers.
Arguably the most anticipated moment of the movie is Rey handing Luke his lightsaber.
In the film Luke is handed his old weapon.
He remains silent and tosses it over his shoulder and off the cliff, much to the shock of Rey.
This was far from what she and the audience expected, and that was the intent of Johnson.
