White House counselor Kellyanne Conway on Monday criticized Doug Jones, Alabama's Democratic candidate for the U.S. Senate.
Her comments made during an appearance on 'Fox & Friends' have resulted in an ethics complaint being filed against her, reports Bloomberg.
Walter Shaub, former director of the Office of Government Ethics, said on Wednesday that he submitted one to the U.S. Office of Special Counsel, which investigates possible violations of the Hatch Act.
That measure prohibits employees of the federal government from using their official title when involved in political efforts, such as campaigns and elections, notes CBS News.
In a tweet, Shaub said Conway was clearly on the Fox program in an official capacity when she made the unfavorable comments about Jones.
Conway said, in part, "Folks, don't be fooled. He will be a vote against tax cuts. He is weak on crime. Weak on borders. He's strong on raising your taxes."
The White House has pushed back on Shaub's assertion.
"Ms. Conway did not advocate for or against the election of a candidate, and specifically declined to encourage Alabamans to vote a certain way. She was speaking about issues and her support for the President's agenda. This election is for the people of Alabama to decide," White House principal deputy press secretary Raj Shah said in a statement.
This is not Conway's first tangle with ethics rules.
Earlier this year, she was under scrutiny for pushing Ivanka Trump's clothing line during a televised interview but was cleared as the sales pitch was deemed inadvertent.
