Crowds in Canberra erupted with cheer on November 15 after the the Australian Bureau of Statistics announced survey results in favour of same-sex marriage.
Liberal Member for Brindabella Mark Parton in the Australian Capital Territory posted this footage of the scene. He wrote on Twitter: “That was more emotional than I thought it would be. I won’t confirm or deny the presence of tears… Let’s get this finished. #VoteYes”
Parton was part of a Liberal and Nationals group that broke ranks from their conservative colleagues to campaign for a “yes” vote in the Marriage Law Postal Survey, Canberra Times reported.
More than 61 per cent of Australians voted to allow same-sex couples to marry and more than 38 percent voted no. The postal vote is non-binding. Credit: Mark Parton via Storyful
