The NIST traceable 6.5R has an irradiation range of 0-199.9 UVI and response of 280-400 nanometers, with resolution of 0.1 UV Index and extremely high accuracy of +/-10%. The sensor is a silicon carbide photodiode packaged in a hermetically sealed UV glass window cap. A metal oxide interference filter and diffuser blocks most UVA from response.

Because the Model 6.5R Reptile UV Index Meter’s erythemally weighted action spectrum is extremely close to the action spectrum for vitamin D3 synthesis, it is the ideal tool to determine proper UV dose for your reptile, per the appropriate Ferguson Zone for the species. And now the Ferguson Zone chart is displayed right on the meter’s face, giving the user an instant and accurate dose reference.

Ferguson Zones were developed back in 2010, when a team of herpetologists led by Professor Gary Ferguson of Texas Christian University published research using data gathered with Solarmeter Model 6.5 UV Index Meters. The study summarized the daily UV exposure of 15 species of reptiles that were studied in the wild. These species were grouped into four zones, now called “Ferguson Zones,” according to their daily sun exposure requirements. In 2012, the British and Irish Association of Zoos and Aquaria (BIAZA) built on Ferguson’s research to produce a document allocating Ferguson Zones to 254 species of reptiles and amphibians, and today ongoing research continues to apply Ferguson Zones to even more species. (You can download much of this data direct from our website.)

We didn’t mess with a good thing! The new Reptile version of the Model 6.5 is exactly the same as the original in terms of all components, calibration, and operation. The only changes are the black case and the new graphics. As before, this handheld model’s rugged plastic case is palm-sized for effortless portability, measuring a compact 4.2” long x 2.4” wide x 0.9” deep and weighing only 4.5 ounces, including the 9V battery. The battery works down to 6.5VDC before requiring replacement, so it should last approximately 2 years under typical service load.

Using this Solarmeter unit is easy. First, unpack it, and remove it from its included carrying case. Then, simply press and hold the push button switch on the front face of the unit, aim the sensor window on the top panel of the meter directly at the UV source, and note the reading on the 3.5 digit LCD display.
