Why give body measurements when you can fight femicide?

Miss Peru 2018 contestants delivered statistics on violence and murder, rather than listing their bust, waist, and hip sizes. A typical example was, “My name is Camila Canicoba and I represent the department of Lima. My measurements are: 2,202 cases of femicide reported in the last nine years in my country.”

The beauty contestants highlighted a growing problem of gender violence in Peru. During the bathing suit competition, newspaper clippings of murdered and assaulted women were displayed. And the final segment asked contestants what laws they would change to help victims. The event’s organizer said focusing the pageant on gender violence was a way to empower women.
