Catalan leader taunts Spanish government with image of presidential palace as his colleagues defy threats by Madrid to arrest them if they try to perform civil duties today

The sacked Catalan president and other officials face a showdown with Madrid on Monday morning amid fears that they will be arrested if they try to go to work.

Last night, Carles Puigdemont's bodyguard confirmed to MailOnline that his boss was intending to go to work in defiance of threats from Spain.

Today, the beleaguered leader took to Instagram to post a picture of the presidential palace roof with the caption 'good morning', though it was not thought to have been taken today.

Spain's State Attorney, José Manuel Maza, has said that he intends to present two sets of charges for 'rebellion', the first against Mr Puigdemont and the second against the president of the Catalan parliament, Carme Forcadell.

Journalists gathered outside the offices of the president in central Sant Jaume square as well as those of the finance minister in anticipation of possible high-profile arrests.
