Bernard Richter had a “once in a lifetime experience” when a shark popped out of water near where he was fishing at Ballina, New South Wales, on October 29.

Richter said he and his friend threw some snappers into Richmond River near the Ballina RSL Club and were stunned by the appearance of a “monster shark” that was at least nine foot long, The Northern Star reported. The veteran fishermen said the fish stayed for around 10 minutes but the experience would not keep him from swimming in the river again.

Southern Cross University marine ecologist Dr. Daniel Bucher said the shark was likely a grey nurse because of its pair of similar sized fins. This type of shark is uncommon in the area and is not known to attack humans but Dr. Bucher advised people not to try luring them with baits. Credit: Bernard Richter via Storyful
