If you want your kicks to sound like superstar DJs like David Guetta, Zedd and Calvin Harris, youve come to the right place!\r
\r
In this video, JT from Delicate Beats shows you how simple it is to get a thumping kick only with a few kick samples and a good drum synth plugin.\r
\r
0:43 Step #1: Find the root not of your kick and make sure it is or becomes the same as your chords and melodies. For samples, pitch up or down and use a guitar tuner plugin or a pitch correction tool to make sure you get the right musical note. For more flexibility, use a drum synth such as Logics Ultrabeat to easily change the root note frequency, adjust decay time on it, etc.\r
\r
4:56 Step #2: Now, lets layering the sub kick with other sampled kicks to get more texture, bite, etc. Its important to bring in a few kicks with different charers, play with the balance, the frequency of the low cut to get a unique kick.\r
\r
7:06 Step #3: Now that the kick sounds good, the real secret of EDM masters is to have as little music as possible playing at the same time as the kick. This is why side chain compression is so heavily used these days. EQing out anything thats in the kick territory is also crucial (anything below 90 Hz approximately). To me, the right side chain compression has to match the groove. Fast attack, and then close your eyes to set the release ! If you want the sound to disappear while the kick is playing, crank up the ratio to 1:5 or even 1:10 ! Whatever sounds good.\r
\r
10:55 Step #4:If you want that kick to rule them all, make your bass sit on top of it. Roll off anything below 80-90 Hz (depending on the sound youre using). Side chain compression will once again come in very handy, but you can also approach your bass playing as a counter melody/bassline to the kick, playing notes in between your kicks. That way, they both get a little shine !\r
\r
ADDITIONAL TIP: something i forgot to mention in the video. Because listeners are going to get banged in the ears/head with your newfound kick magic, try making substantial dips around 500 Hz and 200 Hz. I found out this makes the kicks MUCH smoother yet doesnt compromise the attack and the low bass.\r

This video teaching your how to mix your EDM kick sounds could make the difference between a good beat with something thats just not right and a crazy dance floor killer!\r
