Huge rallies took place in the Spanish capital on Saturday after millions of Catalans voted for independence in a controversial referendum.
Organisers of one of the rallies asked people to come dressed in white without flags of either Spain or Catalonia.
They gathered outside the city hall and called on Madrid and Barcelona to talk to resolve their differences.
Meanwhile around 50,000 people gathered in Colon Square beneath an enormous Spanish flag for a "patriotic" march organised by activists to defend unity.
