You dont need an expensive farrier to trim your horses hooves – you can do it yourself with a sharp rasp, a hoof-stand and an understanding of what youre aiming for. Hooves are delicate things, though, so take care and maybe get some advice while youre starting out.\r
\r
In this example, Flora (a three-year-old Irish Cob filly) has never been shod and her hooves have worn unevenly as she walked on roads. (We will probably need to shoe her as she gets older and does more carriage work.) Our aim is to keep the hooves symmetrical and flat. We inspect them regularly and rasp them once a month, or so.\r
\r
The farrier shoes our other horses and once in a while he checks Floras feet – its good experience for her too. \r
\r
Of course, horses are immensely strong and can be dangerous – be very careful and always have some one else present when youre working with them. Flora doesnt kick – but dont expect all horses to be as cooperative.\r
