6 Must have items every dog owner needs,\r
\r
\r
1. A Crate\r
\r
A crate is not a bad thing! Its not a place to put your dog when its bad! Think of a crate as your dogs personal space or their bedroom. Your dog should have a place that they can be comfortable in and call their own. Purchasing a crate that your dog can sit in lay in and turn around in is perfect.\r
\r
Dont try to get one thats too big, your dog wants a small space where they can feel protected. The other main purpose of a crate is to have a place to keep your dog when it is unsupervised.\r
\r
2. A Collar with tags\r
\r
Our dogs may get lost at some point in their life. Its important to have your dogs name with a phone number on it so if the dog does accidentally stray away from you, whoever finds your dog will know how to cont you. Dont allow for the collar to be too tight or too loose on your dog. You should be able to fit two fingers comfortably between the collar and your dogs neck.\r
\r
Be sure to find a collar that best suits your dog. There are many to collars to choose from, different types of collars include:\r
\r
A buckle collar is a regular collar without any type of release.\r
\r
A martingale collar is typically made out of nylon tightens with even pressure around the entire neck when the leash is pulled.\r
\r
Harnesses are great for smaller dogs whose necks can be easily damaged by pulling on neck collars. There are different types such as a chest and a body harnesses.\r
\r
Gentle leaders are head harnesses. Horses use a similar device to be lead by their owner. Its great to have control on the head of the dog because that is what leads the dog! Having complete direction of the head will give you a lot more control too.\r
\r
Consult a professional when using a prong or chain collars! Used incorrectly can be damaging to your dogs throat.\r
\r
3. A Leash\r
\r
Your dog needs to know how to walk on a leash for safety reasons and to expel pent up energy from hanging out in the house all day. Your leash is there to keep your dog attached to you and safe from dangers.\r
\r
4. A Bed\r
\r
Your dog needs a place that they can call their own to sleep on and relax! Ideally you should teach your dog to sleep in their bed instead of yours in order to build boundaries and keep your bed clean and hair free.\r
\r
5. Toys/ Kongs /Puzzles\r
\r
Your dog is a very intelligent creature! You should not expect that your dog will be okay if they have nothing to do! Your dog is prone to destructive behaviors if not given the correct toys. Things like Kongs and Dog Puzzles are available to give the dog brain games to work on to try and get yummy treats out of.\r
\r
6. Chews\r
\r
Our dogs instinctually want to chew on things. Instead of having your dog chew up your couch supply chews. Chews also help clean the teeth and remove tartar. If you prefer non rawhide options I suggest purchasing Merik Antler Bones and Himalayan Dog Chews.
