It is crunch time in the British parliament after days of debate with the vote on the EU Withdrawal Bill.

Prime Minister Teresa May is trying to face down a wave of opposition to her plan from both the opposition, led by the Labour party and its vision of a “soft” Brexit, and the hardline Brexiteers within her own party.

Roughly half of the Tories’ MPs are Brexiteers, and they have been fighting a rearguard action as amendment after amendment has been added to pull the bill more towards the centre ground and ensure May a majority.

Should this bill fail, it could trigger a vote of no-confidence which Labour’s Jeremy Corbyn would pounce on. He is pushing for an early general election.

Whatever happens inside Westminster Palace, there are now daily demonstrations from one side or the other outside.
