Cleveland, Ohio is currently experiencing an opioid crisis. Between the city and suburbs, 517 overdose deaths occurred last year. One parent of a victim stated, “The pandemic is devastating the very fiber of this country. If this were the flu, our county would be under quarantine.” It seems to be getting worse this year. There have already been 70 deaths in Cuyahoga County so far this year, and 18 in the last three days. One medical examiner said last year saw nearly a 100 percent increase in the total number of overdose deaths in the county. The deaths are blamed almost entirely on powerful new opiods, like fentanyl.
