Biarritz is the historic surfing capital of Europe. In 1957, the American Peter Viertel, husband of the actress Deborah Kerr, was the first to surf the waves of Biarritz. Now known as one of the key surfing locations, Biarritz attracts surfers from all around the world. In Biarritz, the surf culture is everywhere, as proven by the brand-new Cité de l’Océan opened in June 2011 and the number of surf shops and board rental outlets.
