At least one person has been killed in the U.S after white nationalists clashed with protestors at a far-right march in Charlottesville in Virginia.

Video’s posted on social media showed a car ploughing at speed into several slow-moving vehicles, surrounded by a densely packed crowd.

Emergency services were pictured treating a number of people who were injured.

It is not clear if the death came after a car rammed a crowd of opponents of the far-right rally.

The “Unite the Right” march was called to protest against plans to remove a statue of Civil War general, Gen Lee, who commanded the pro-slavery Confederate forces in the US Civil War of 1861-65.

A state of emergency has been declared. This enables police to mobilise resources.

President Donald Trump condemned the violence on Twitter:

We ALL must be united & condemn all that hate stands for. There is no place for this kind of violence in America. Lets come together as one!— Donald J. Trump (@realDonaldTrump) August 12, 2017
