A vehicle slammed into a crowd of protesters in Charlottesville, Virginia, on August 12. The demonstration was originally scheduled by white supremacists to protest Charlottesville City Council’s decision to remove a statue of Robert E. Lee.

People rushed to help those injured at the corner of 4th and Water streets, as seen in this video. The incident was reported shortly after a neo-Nazi protest and counter-protest were dispersed as unlawful assembly by police. One person was killed and 19 were injured, according to the city of Charlottesville.

A state of emergency was declared by Governor Terry McAuliffe. Credit: Instagram/mclassick via Storyful
