Prisoners in Nairobi, Kenya, are voting in this year’s presidential election. For Kenyan prisoners, who won the right to vote in 2010, the laws reflect a more lenient culture than in the U.S., where only Maine and Vermont allow felons to vote from prison. The U.K. has even stricter laws, forbidding any convicted prisoners from voting.
In the U.S., 14 states allow inmates to vote after their release, 24 states make prisoners finish parole and probation before they can vote, and convicts from 10 states lose their right to vote permanently.
In all, these laws restrict more than 5 million citizens from voting.
