AHMEDABAD, INDIA — A driver miraculously escaped death when he crashed his car and was impaled by a two-foot-long metal rod.

Night shift worker Piyush Sundarva, 26, was driving home from work when he fell asleep at the wheel, the Mirror reported.

Piyush's car spun out of control and crashed into a metal road divider. The barricades smashed through the vehicle's windscreen and a metal rod punctured Piyush's chest.

He was rushed to the hospital where he remained awake during a two-and-a-half-hour long operation to remove the spike from his chest.

Piyush lost two fingers and fractured nine ribs, but the operation was a success and he is expected to make a full recovery.
