Donald Trump ‘should GIVE AID to North Korea’ not impose sanctions, US envoy declares
NORTH Korea should be handed humanitarian aid by the US, a former White House envoy declared during a hearing at the Senate Foreign Relations Subcommittee. Instead Washington should target the North Koreans who are committing human rights offences.The former special envoy on North Korean human rights issues added: “We need to try to identify the people that are really the ones that are doing it.“In some cases, it's a question of talking with people who've left North Korea, who had some of these horrible experiences with North Korean abuse and give the information as to who the individuals are.” Following the death of Otto Warmbier, the former US envoy called for a selective travel ban that would stop all recreational travel but allowed humanitarian missions to the hermit kingdom.He added: “People ought not to be going there for tourism. To run in the Pyongyang marathon? No — people shouldn't be doing that.“On the other hand, for people who are involved in humanitarian efforts — for example, medical assistance to North Korea for multi drug-resistant tuberculosis — there would probably some merit in terms of having that happen.”
The US State Department “strongly warns” citizens to not travel to the secretive state because of the “serious risk of arrest and long-term detention under North Korea's system of law enforcement”.It is estimated that 1,000 US citizens travel to North Korea annually. After Mr Warmbier's death, Senate Foreign Relations Chairman Bob Corker, a Tennessee Republican, said: “There's no question we shouldn't have people on a willy-nilly basis going to North Korea. We should have a travel ban, and we're working on legislation right now.“We've got three Americans [detained] there now. It ends up affecting our own national security.”. 00FastNews.
