Amid heightened security at the Temple Mount in Jerusalem, Israeli security forces fired rubber bullets and scuffled with Muslim worshippers in order to disperse a demonstration near the Lion’s Gate of the Old City’s Muslim Quarter on July 18.

An undisclosed number of wounded Palestinians are being treated for their injuries at a nearby hospital. The protests came after President Mahmoud Abbas’ Fatah party reportedly called for a “day of rage” against metal detectors and turnstiles at the entrance the al-Aqsa mosque compound that were introduced after a deadly shootout there four days earlier.

Israeli police said on Twitter that they had used “means of dispersal” after Muslim worshippers had thrown stones and bottles at officers. They later reported that two officers were lightly injured as police tried to disperse “riots” outside the mosque. Credit: Facebook/Majid Faraj via Storyful
