Julio Borges, president of Venezuela’s National Assembly and a leading opposition figure, was one of more than seven million people who cast a vote in an unofficial referendum on July 16.

A woman was reportedly shot dead while in a line to vote in the referendum, in which voters rejected a citizens assembly proposed by President Nicolas Maduro that would have the power to dismiss the national assembly and rewrite the constitution.

The referendum had no legal power. Maduro reportedly called it illegal and meaningless.
