Après des années de recherche, un groupe de scientifiques pense détenir la clef d'un passage vers d'autres espaces temps. À la tête du projet, Jim Beale voit son jour de gloire arriver. Malgré les inquiétudes du groupe face à ce qui pourrait transformer à jamais l'avenir de l'humanité, il décide de servir de cobaye pour l'ultime expérience. Au moment de mettre la théorie en pratique, il est loin d'imaginer ce que le portail qu'il vient d'ouvrir va laisser passer dans notre dimension.
