'Remainers are STILL in charge' Nicky Morgan beats Jacob Rees-Mogg to land top Brexit job
JACOB REES-MOGG has been beaten to a top Government position by Remainer Nicky Morgan, with critics blasting the appointment for keeping pro-EU MPs “in charge”. Nigel Farage tweeted in response to her appointment: "Remainers are still in charge despite Brexit vote." Mrs Morgan received the backing of Labour MPs who want to stop the PM’s hardline Brexit plan.Mrs Morgan won 200 of the 570 votes cast and ended up with 290 votes after the fifth round of voting. In Mrs Morgan's manifesto for the job, she said that it was "more important than ever to forge a wide consensus on Brexit and for parliament to question ministers on their decisions". She also made it clear she would be the first woman to hold the position.Mrs Morgan has clashed with the Prime Minister after she was axed from the cabinet.  Since Mrs Morgan was sacked by Theresa May last year, she has been one of the most prominent MPs warning of economic dangers of Brexit. On Twitter, Mrs Morgan wrote: "Delighted & honoured to be elected by my fellow MPs as Chair of the House of Commons Select Committee. Lots to do now.” Conservatives Richard Bacon, Charlie Elphicke, Stephen Hammond and John Penrose were also in the race for the job. The fellow front-runner for the job, Brexit-supporting Mr Rees-Mogg, has built up an army of followers with even a campaign urging him to stand as Prime Minister. Mr Rees-Mogg clashed with BoE Governor Mark Carney last year, accusing him of intervening in politics after he made a number of statements calling on the electorate to vote against Brexit.In the run-up to the vote, Mr Rees-Mogg said he would put his "strong views" on Brexit to one side to achieve "consensus and balance". Tory MP Bob Neil has kept his role as chairman of the Justice Select Committee.



Former Labour frontbencher Rachel Reeves, who is also very pro-EU, also won the position of chairman of the Business, Energy and Industrial Strategy committee. Former education minister Robert Halfon beat five fellow Conservative MPs to become chairman of the Education select committee.Clive Betts was re-elected as chairman for Communities and Local Government.Lilian Greenwood won the race to chair the Transport select committee.Liberal Democrat Norman Lamb beat party colleague Jo Swinson and will chair the Science and Technology committee.. 00FastNews.
