Rees-Mogg family names: Tory MP gave original names to all his children
KNOWN for giving his children highly unusual monikers, the Tory MP didn’t disappoint with his latest arrival. We reveal the origins of their fascinating names. Sixtus Dominic Boniface Christopher There have been a number of popes called Sixtus but ReesMogg’s latest child is named after the third-century pontiff who was beheaded on the orders of the Roman emperor Valerian. The name was originally spelt Xystus but “that seems a little bit brave even by our standards”, says the MP. Dominic is another Catholic saint as is Boniface who was born close to Rees-Mogg’s seat in North East Somerset and went to Germany as a missionary. Meanwhile Christopher is a reference to a family relative.Alfred Wulfric Leyson Pius KingAlfred the Great of burnt cakes fame is the inspiration for the fifth child’s fi rst name while Wulfric was a hermit saint who was born in Compton Martin, a village not far from Rees-Mogg’s constituency home, a Grade IIlisted manor house.The MP once explained the origin of the third name in an interview: “Leyson is a family name and honours Louis Leyson Rees-Mogg who died at Gallipoli just over 100 years ago.” No fewer than 12 popes have been called Pius but Alfred was named after Pius IX, credited with defi ning the dogma of the immaculate conception of Jesus. Anselm Charles FitzwilliamRees-Mogg’s wife Helena came up with this “lovely” boy’s name after strolling down St Anselm’s Place in Mayfair. Charles is a reference to one of Helena’s ancestors, Charles Watson-Wentworth, the fabulously wealthy 2nd Marquess of Rockingham, who served two brief terms as prime minister in the 18th century.Fitzwilliam was the marquess’s nephew, himself an earl, who once owned Wentworth Woodhouse, then England’s largest private home and the inspiration for Pemberley, the fictional country estate owned by Fitzwilliam Darcy in Pride And Prejudice.Thomas Wentworth Somerset DunstanThomas is named after Helena’s “most distinguished ancestor” Thomas Wentworth, an earl who was executed during the Civil War for his support of King Charles I.Wentworth is another reference to Wentworth Woodhouse, while Somerset was chosen in memory of Helena’s father Somerset de Chair. Mary Anne Charlotte Emma Depending on which way you look at it the Rees-Moggs’ only daughter could be considered the luckiest of their children in that all her names are fairly mainstream.This is because all four of her names were taken from those of Jacob’s three sisters whose father William – later Lord – Rees-Mogg was an editor of The Times.Peter Theodore Alphege The family’s first born got off lightly with his two first names but his father excelled himself with Alphege, a name that dates back to an 11th-century archbishop of Canterbury.Alphege was pelted with ox bones before being finished off with an axe after he refused to pay Danegeld, a Viking tax. As Rees-Mogg puts it: “He’s a sort of tax martyr.”
