Hundreds of thousands of people gathered in Istanbul on Sunday, July 9, for a rally marking the end of protest march from Ankara to Istanbul on July 9.

MPs and supporters from Turkey’s main opposition party, the Republican People’s Party (CHP), began a “justice” march on June 15, reportedly in protest at the detention of one the party deputies, Enis Berberoglu.

Berberoglu was sentenced to 25 years’ imprisonment on spying charges on June 14.

CHP leader Kemal Kilicdaroglu told the crowd the country was effectively a dictatorship, according to Reuters, and that he would continue his opposition to the crackdown, purges and imprisonments that followed last year’s attempted coup. The rally came two days before the anniversary of the coup attempt on July 11.
