Drone footage from June 30 captured a newly formed island off the coast of North Carolina’s Cape Point.
According to an NPR interview with Dave Hallac, superintendent of the Cape Hatteras National Seashore, the island had been gradually appearing, and is now several feet above ground.
Hallac said locals dubbed the island “Shelly Island” because of the abundance of seashells found on the island.
